Got a ticket and I Googled it. Can I trust what I just read?
July 26, 2018

The internet and Google in particular have become a great source of information for many people all over the world. The term “Google it” has become part of our everyday language but just because you read something online can you really be sure the information is accurate and correct. Should you believe everything you read especially when it has to do with potential fines or worse.

Some of the information out there will be useful to you however, the truth is that most of the information you will read online will most likely get you laughed out of court. It’s also important to know that the information you find online will vary from province to province and from country to country. Some information you find online maybe irrelevant in another province. What if you received a ticket while visiting south of the border.

Most people assume because they read about something that someone said or did in one situation which worked for them that it will work for them as well. Just because someone was able to get a ticket dismissed doesn’t mean the same strategy will work for everyone attempting to contest a ticket. The truth is that it’s not the case for most people.

Amendments to the highway safety code are constantly being made to keep up with how vehicles and the world around us is evolving. For example, you might receive advice from someone you know who recently had to deal with a traffic ticket in court and used a specific loophole in the law to get out of a ticket however when you attempt to use the same loophole you find the law has been changed.

In some cases, people will read there is nothing that can be done to help fight their ticket. This could also be misleading as every case is unique and should be looked at on an individual basis. Everything from what you did to what the officer did could affect the outcome.

Misinformation or misunderstanding what you are reading can potentially cost you by having to pay large fines, losing demerit points and possibly having to pay more for your insurance. In certain situations this might even get put on your permanent record.

That horrible feeling you get when you’re staring at a $500 ticket which makes you want to find a loophole any loophole to get out of it fast. That’s why so many people go online to try and find some crazy farfetched defence which inevitably doesn’t work.

Most people fail to see or understand that the courts rely on traffic tickets as source of monthly and yearly revenue.  Across the country traffic ticket fines generate millions of dollars in revenue. Therefore, the laws are constantly being updated and old loopholes are being closed to ensure people can’t get out of a ticket so easily. What worked last time might not work next time.

Over the last decade, many lawyers and law firms have been popping up that focus and specialize solely on traffic ticket fines and nothing else.
